A New Rule for Votes - Version 2

Posted on October 30th, 2017 10:24 AM EST
website votes servers
Our goal was to avoid that big multiple server network use the same pool of players to boost the score of their servers.

We have now a new idea that might be better and close from our goal.

We will no longer limit the number of servers per page from the same owner/group/network. We want now to limit to 3 the number of servers a SteamID can vote for, per day.

Let us know what do you think about this.

1 out of 3 days voting for servers takes an eternity, if it works at all. Not my connection. Happens no matter where I vote from, and happens too all of our players (from West coast USA to West Coast EU). Hard to keep any kind of momentum in terms of Vote activity. Less people vote, less clicks on the site... Yadda Yadaa.... Good luck making it work right.

An issue has been found. The new system is disabled until we found the bug.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Clearly something is not right with the new system. I voted for the server cluster I play in yesterday, yet today Im told I have reached my maximum. Have you also changed the timezone for when you can vote again?

Why not make it that we vote per cluster instead of per server?

I have also noticed this, it's a right pain for myself and my community. Seems to be voting once per 24 hours, rather than on a daily reset.

If they do decide to keep with the once per 24 hours, I recommend having a countdown timer when you next attempt. Something like "you last voted at XX:XX:XX, you can vote again in XX:XX", rather than seeing "You have reached your daily vote limit".

But hey-ho, review and refine.

Looks like they changed it back to the previous "per day" method, but I've lost a days worth of votes in the process.

Some people on our servers are still having this, somethings not right here.

I am not able to vote even every 24hrs. Ive made sure im note sharing an IP to vote (went through that already long ago with my wife). Wasnt sure if maybe i was voting too late and just being in the wrong time zone. But yesterday i voted at 12:30A (more than 24 hours ago, and more than "one day") the 10th. I am unable to vote at all today. It says i reached my maximum.

Im all for voting for clusters vs voting for servers. as long as i dont get cheated out of my votes. Its hard enough keeping servers busy.

So after one day, all the big multi server clusters are still at the top, and now have 3 servers rather than two up there.
I've also taken the only sensible option and stopped people voting on one of my 4 servers to prevent the now limited votes being split and resulting in lower ranks across the board.
Somehow this is actually worse for everyone than the last system.

You should limit it to two or maybe only one vote per day per user. There is no reason for a user to be able to vote for more then one server in my opinion.

but some users play on multiple servers, I think the minimum should be two votes.

I agree with folk who suggest grouping servers would be better - 1 voter per cluster kinda thing... if that's doable.

The system you created, limiting to two servers voting - is basically a good one - just need to figure out how not to lose all links to other clustered servers. We ended up deleting our other two!

i'd say limit to 1 or 2 max 3 is still alot cluster boosting :D

Look at the front page, all the large clusters are already still there.

Any organised community will have diverted all their votes onto 2 servers to prevent the wasted votes on the ones that don't count. There's no way to prevent having 10 servers worth of people voting on 2 of a communities servers.
The best thing to do is squash all of a communities servers down into one listing and have it take up as little space as possible, while still allowing them to advertise all of their servers.

I agree that maybe, to improve the system a group of servers will be voted, limiting the number of votes by steam id to two, so that they can vote for two communities of servers if they play in more than one. In addition community administrators win, because with one vote, vote all our servers and there would be more servers from different communities in the top positions.

and please leave more space between changes in the voting system, because we have to work hard to adapt to each change.

Congratulations for all the work and thanks.

It's better than the last attempt, but still has a few flaws.

With the game designed the way it is, it's very much encouraged to have a cluster of servers with all the official maps. There are currently 4 official maps and at least another two coming at some point.
The main issue with this new announcement is that it still leaves communities with more than 3 servers unable to advertise or populate any more than their 3 most popular. This'll also leave the front page filled with servers all running the most popular map.
Obviously as this is one of the best places to advertise a server we'll all have no choice but to adapt, but I still think having one listing to advertise all the servers would be a better idea. The groups system already exists, just give us the option to list the group rather than individual servers.

As a further example of why this would be better, the original intention of these changes was to stop big communities listing loads of servers and filling the whole list. From what I can see this has worked, but the same communities are still at the top. If you compress them even further into one listing then it not only makes them take even less space on the front page, but also gives them a chance to advertise as many servers as they want without harming anyone else's chances.

This seems like a better approach, however I can't help but think it may be better to group up servers so people can vote for the one group. This would mean instead of having multiple servers listed, they could all be under the one group, which would give 25 different servers a chance to be on the 1st page.

I know you guys have a group system in place at the moment, but it seems a tad bit redundant. If you rank the server by groups instead of the single servers rank, I think it would be far better and give a wider range for people to select from. Rather than searching the first few pages.
